Chalk Art Adorns Downtown

 Despite the dubious weather forecast, the sun did shine – even if only briefly – on the 4’x 4’ squares of colorful chalk drawings along Courthouse Lane and Peirce Street for the Arts on Main Chalk Drawing Contest.

“We held off canceling and we’re glad that we did,” said Jane Parillo, owner of Scribes calligraphy studio on Main Street and a committee member who helped organize the judging.  She said that this was the first year that the Main Street Merchants Association took on the event, as the town has cut the funding to run it.

According to Jerry Meyer, executive director of the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, which collaborated with the Merchants Association for the event, 66 squares had been mapped out, and about 10 registrants did not show up. Yet, it looked like others had stepped in during the afternoon to fill in those left blank.
